Today I fulfilled a long-time dream. I ordered ducklings. Actually, 8 ducklings and 2 geese. They are to arrive the week of May 19th, and I could not be more excited. It has been fun as we’ve planned out the animals for the homestead to realize that each of us has at least one specific animal we’re just dying to call our own. For me, it’s the water fowl.
Do we have water nearby? I’m sure you’re asking. The answer is, not really. Our friend who owns the 200 acres surrounding our little plot has multiple ponds, but we are surrounded by pretty deep ravines on three sides that sometimes get a little wet. My plan is to bring in a kiddie pool and keep these babies near the house.
I just think they’re the cutest little things, with their rounded beaks and playful spirits. I’m looking forward to watching them splash and play as they make their home in our yard.
I’ve ordered a variety of laying females, as my main goal is superior egg production. We have so many friends with chicken eggs, we’re excited to have something a little different to use for ourselves and possibly to trade with others for their homestead offerings. The geese are unsexed Toulouse – I am most eager to find out their gender, and I am hoping they will be wonderful guardians for the ducks!
